About the New York Convention Center
Once filled with working class and poor Irish Americans, providing the infrastructure for the business district in midtown, the area is quickly becoming a hot spot for the more affluent, up and coming socioeconomic groups in the city. The convention center is located in the middle of this area and reaping the benefits of the shift in the status of the neighborhood.
The convention center, named for US Senator Jacob K. Javits, was started in 1980 and completed in 1986. With a total space of 1.8 million square feet, the center can host almost any large scale exhibit or event. It is the major convention center in the city and one of the busiest in the nation. It has hosted such events as the New York Comic Con and the New York International Auto Show. It also is near New York John F. Kennedy International Airport and New York Laguardia Airport for local airport transfers.
The facility itself boast a Lower Exhibition Hall, an Upper Exhibition Hall, a Special Events Center, 102 meeting rooms, a cafeteria/lounge area, several food court areas with a variety of food choices, a shoe shine stand, access to taxi and other transportation options, a concierge, a gallery, a pavilion, 50 loading docks covering 2 levels, a public plaza with a pedestrian link under the street and water walls, and surface parking for up to 140 cars.
