About Wicker Park-Bucktown
The young fly by the seat of their pants type has always been drawn to the Wicker park neighborhood. Today the atmosphere is starting to change as the residents evolve into family and the older generation. However the neighborhood seems to retain its youthful, quirky vibe.

Wicker Park gets its name from Joel and Charles Wicker. It all started with land that was donated to the city of Chicago by these brothers. Wicker Park still remains the center of the neighborhood today. Since its inception the park has acquired a basketball cout playground, community garden and a huge granite-cut fountain that sits in the center of the park.

The German and Scandinavian residents that moved into the neighborhood after the Chicago Fire in 1871 learned a great deal about how to build new homes. Don’t use Wood. The immaculate brick homes you see in the Wicker Park neighborhood was the result. Many of these now are 2 and 3 flats now. Hoyne street was dubbed Bear Baron Row back then because the number of brewery owners that build their houses on that street and these houses still stand today.

Many vintages houses remain today but plenty of new developments have sprang up as well. The newer buildings are attractive to singles, young couples, and newlyweds that are just starting out. One look around and you will quickly see that Wicker Park is a young neighborhood (mid-twenties and up).

In Wicker Park you can walk almost everywhere. Everything is within walking distance from bars to grocery stores. When you just can’t walk there are cabs everywhere but a better option if you are trying to save a buck is the public transportation system. The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) operates excellent service to downtown and many other neighborhoods in Chicago. The CTA Blue line is a quick 10 minute trip to the Loop. There are several other buses in the area that go to different sections of the city. If you really want to get a car you must note that parking is hideous in the neighborhood. You run the risk of getting ticketed and you will most likely need a Zone Permit.
