SDSU is one of 23 schools that combine to form the California State University system and is the third oldest of the members. The school was founded in 1897 and originally was a school for female elementary school teachers. San Diego State University has been named as the top small research school in the country for four straight years and is famous for the number of Fulbright Scholars it turns out. The school also has a large athletic program and competes in the Western Athletic Conference. Notable SDSU grads include Gregory Peck and hall-of-famers Tony Gwynn and Marshall Faulk.
