The night life in Pullman is not dead but it is not lively either. For a night out on the town in Pullman you will be visiting one of the local pubs or local bars. Pullman’s Pub for one boasts to have made cinematic history, in the 1993 movie the Fugitive starring Harrison Ford. In the movie Ford uses the pay phone in the pub.

Pullman was considered on the most famously planned out community, has easy ground transportation to ORD International. George Pullman created his "Pullman Town" for the employees that worked in his railroad car company. The employees had to meet some strict guidelines just to live in the area including behavioral standards.
About Pullman
For their day and time in the late 1800’s these row houses had all the comforts and luxuries available by the standards of that era like indoor plumbing, a sewer system and gas. All of this fell apart during the Great Depression when Pullman workers had to take a cut in pay but their rent was not reduced as a result the workers when on strike for two months. The Us government eventually intervened. As years went on and after the death of Pullman it was established by the Supreme Court that the neighborhood was not a part of the company’s charter and had to be sold.

The residents in this area still embrace their storied past. The original buildings (900 houses) of Pullman Town still stand. Visitors to the area can enjoy walking tours exhibits and history at the area museums. Although the history is rich this modern day city offers good schools, convenient shopping and affordable real estate.

The architect of Pullman Town Solon Spencer Beman, and landscape architect Nathan Barrett created a uniform design throughout the area that still stands today. The houses were Queen Anne style homes and have been maintained and renovated but retained their historical aesthetics.

Other housing opportunities include ranch style hoes, bungalows, and two-story brick homes. These new constructions offer more space and unlike the row houses these have front yards and garages.

The Pullman neighborhood is 16 miles south of the Loop and just like during the factory days many people still get around by foot. If you just like to look at historic structures the best way to experience it all is by foot. The trek into downtown is just a bit much for those that need to work or play in the downtown area. The Dan Ryan Expressway runs north for commuters to get to downtown. If you don’t have a car the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) has a great public transportation system coupled with the Meta commuter line.

In Pullman Town the stores were even owned by George Pullman, none of those stores are still around today the area is pretty much residential. The Digit! Pullman is the exception to the rule. It offers and eclectic mix of items from furniture to clothing and 70s-era novelties.
