About the Port of Anchorage
The Port of Anchorage, also known simply as POA, is a deep-water port with two petroleum berths and four bulk carrier berths. The POA is an entire enterprise department ran under the Municipality of Anchorage. It is distinguished from other municipal departments due to the port creating enough revenue to solely support its operations as well as paying its own annual fees to the municipality.
The Mayor of Anchorage Alaska gets the honor of appointing the POA Director. The POA has 2,400 employees and 9 commissioners that generate an average of 10 million dollars in operating revenue. Serving Alaska since 1961, the POA has provide 52 years of uninterrupted service. 90 percent of consumer goods that are used for 85 percent of the state of Alaska come through the POA.
