Even though families make up a very small percentage of the population, the schools in the Village are some of the best in the country. Seventy percent of the students in the most popular public schools in the neighborhood were found to be reading well above the national average for their grade level.

Greenwich Village, known to the locals as simply “the Village”, is one of the most popular neighborhoods in New York, but also one of the most expensive.
About Greenwich Village
The median household income is one hundred and twenty thousand per year, offset by the cost of living, which is one hundred and sixteen percent higher than the national average. Rent alone is seventeen hundred eighty eight dollars per month, seven hundred dollars more than New York City’s average, the rent also tends to be more competitive around Manhattan due to the number of ground transportation from LGA airport, one side note is when you come to Greenwich Village is to try one of the pizzarias as this area is known for having some of the best pizza in NYC.

Over sixty two percent of the residents have never been married, which can partially be attributed to NYU, which sits within the Village’s boundaries. The Village is one of the best educated neighborhoods in Manhattan, with over eighty percent of the population holding a bachelor’s degree or higher.

The night life in Greenwich is top notch, as are the restaurants. The sophisticated nightclubs and trendy boutiques are offset by the residential streets that are considered off the grid. These streets get that name by being set at an angle to the rest of the borough and have a feel all their own. Brownstones and town homes are screened from the street by a line of trees and give this section of the neighborhood a much quieter feel.

The contrast between the quiet brownstones and the thriving nightlife is one of the things that residents love about the Village. Some of New York’s biggest landmarks are in the Village. This includes the Cherry Lane Theater, which is the oldest continually running theater in New York City outside of Broadway.

Known as Little Bohemia, writers, playwrights, painters, sculptors and creative minds of all types have been flocking to the Village for almost a century now. This eclectic mix is what many love about the Village and is reflected in the vast array of entertainment that is to be found in the neighborhood.

The bulk of the Village is protected by historic landmark status, preserving the homes and buildings that date back to the early 1800’s. The edges of the Village lie outside of the landmark boundaries and are constantly evolving with new buildings, both residential and commercial.
