Sitka, Alaska’s Panhandle
The Sitka Airport, named the Rocky Gutierrez Airport after a former mayor of Sitka, has an airport code of SIT. When construction of the airport began, it required the excavation and removal of the bodies from a graveyard used to inter tuberculosis patients from the nearby Mt Edgecumbe hospital. The part of the airport where the bodies used to reside is still known as the Mausoleum as a result.
Sitka has a proud history. It was the site of the sign over of Alaska during the Alaska purchase in 1867. This area is rich in natural wildlife and sightseeing opportunities and tourists enjoy coming to see the glaciers and wild open land and deep ocean vistas. Sitka is the largest city-borough in the United States in terms of geographical area. However, most of this is uninhabited and in some cases uninhabitable land, as the city has a population of only 8,881 as of the 2010 census.
