Before 1967, Walter Air Force Base was located on the 4,600 acres of land. When it closed, it was considered the largest base for the United States Air Force and its Strategic Air Command. The land also serves as a retirement center for the retired American Airlines Airbus jetliners.
Flying out of Roswell, or arriving at Roswell International Airport, ROW, is convenient and offers beautiful scenery and rich history. The Roswell International Air Center offers many benefits to travelers. There is an aircraft tie down available, overnight aircraft parking, a coffee shop and free long and short term parking available.

There are State Parks, National Wildlife Refuges where one can take a leisurely drive and watch the local wildlife in their own habitats. There are many other options for families and visitors to Roswell; theaters, Sand dunes, History museums and historical downtown architecture can all make for a fun and interesting day. The General Douglas L. McBride Military Museum is a must stop visit for anyone interested in the military and its rich history. The Walker Aviation Museum is a small museum with fun, little shops to buy souvenirs at.
There are many interesting facts that visitors can learn about New Mexico and Roswell in particular. Facts about such things as the Enola Gay, Los Alamos National Laboratory and where many German POWs were held during World War II can all be learned here.
