Things you can do to prepare before you leave
So before it gets to the end of the year and the new year is upon us, which for a lot of us means making New Year’s resolutions but why wait until then. If you’re like me you probably already have quite a list going. One of my top resolutions this year is to travel more often. How do I plan to keep this resolution, you may ask? Well, I’m glad you asked. Here’s my plan for traveling more this year:
Plan your trip Planning is a good first step. As the saying goes, a dream without a plan is just a wish. First, figure out where you want to go. Next do the leg work. Research activities, hotels, airfare and ground transportation. Find out about the culture, food and language of the location you’d like to visit. Book your reservations and if possible pay for them in full or put down a deposit on them. Put in for your time off at work. All of these things will make it harder for you to write your trip off and say "I’m too busy, maybe next year." One of the most popular places to visit during the start of a new year is in New York City around the Ball Drop at Times Square during the Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve event. |
Find money for your trip Now for one of the toughest parts – finding the money to fund your vacation. When I ask people what most keeps them from traveling more often than not they say that it’s too expensive. It can be easier than you think to find money to take a fabulous vacation. Try to find places where you can cut back on spending such as buying coffee every day, eating out or going to the movies. Instead put the money you would have spent on these unnecessary items into a travel fund. You’ll be surprised how quickly these things can add up. You can also try signing up for a credit card that offers travel rewards such as airline miles or discounts on hotels or theme parks. |
Remember why you want to travel in the first place Sometimes when we get wrapped up the actual task of planning a vacation it starts to feel like work. It’s easy to forget why you’re going the first place. Remember that you are doing this because you want to enjoy your life more and experience more of the world. You want to create memories that you’ll cherish looking back on them. It may seem like a big task but it is one that is well worth the trouble. Once you get to your destination you’ll be glad you made the effort. |
