About New Bedford Airport
The city of New Bedford has a rich history in whaling for the world. Frederick Douglass, the famous abolitionist, settled in New Bedford in 1838, and wrote about his time in New Bedford in his autobiography. There are monuments to him and Lewis Temple in downtown New Bedford. The New Bedford Regional Airport was officially dedicated in 1942 and was also a big part of history for World War 2. In 1944, the Navy used the airport as a training post and auxiliary facility.
