About Kodiak Airport
This airport played a major role as a refueling and layover stop in the 2nd World War. The airport is serviced by Alaska Air, Era and Island Air Service. Benny Benson State Airport is named in tribute to Benny Benson. Benny was born in Seward, Alaska in 1914. His mother died soon after and he was sent to live in an orphanage. In 1927, Alaska held a contest to design their flag. Benny’s design was chosen from thousands of entries.

The prize money of one thousand dollars was put into a trust, because Benny was only 13. When he graduated high school, he used the prize money for tuition in aviation mechanic’s school. He worked at what was then the Kodiak State Airport. In 2013, the airport was named after him. On the 6th of June 1912 much of Alaska experienced a violent earthquake. The center was in Kodiak at Mount Novarupta. A few hours later, the mountain erupted. Ash fell until the 9th, three whole days. Most buildings in Kodiak were destroyed from the weight of the ash.

The people that did not evacuate had to be rescued. The air was not fit for breathing, ash laid out over one foot deep. The beauty of Kodiak is in its nature. You will be spellbound by the amount of wildlife. Kingfisher Aviation in Kodiak offers up close and personal tours into Brown bear country. The brown bear was driven almost to extinction until laws were put in place. You now can book a tour that will take you safely into the habitat area of these lovely animals. Kingfisher will also arrange whale tours of the Gulf of Alaska. Over 67 humpback whales are known in this gulf region. You can also view sea lions, water foul or take a fishing trip with this premier company.
