The airport handles more than 34 thousand airport operations each year. Frankfort is the 5th smallest state capital with a population of only 25 thousand people. The city is situated on the Kentucky River and it gets its name for an incident that happened on the River in 1780. Stephen Frank was killed while he and other setters were making salt at a ford; the area became Frank’s Ford which later transcribed into Frankfort. The state capital is on the south side of the city while downtown contains most of the cities historical heritage.
