Along the shores of Queen Charlotte Bay, New Island is a small body of land off the shore of West Falkland, especially popular for photographers and lovers of bird watching. Cruise ships are likely to dock along the main island’s larger town of Port Howard or Port Stephens, while smaller ships tender guests ashore with grace. A very hiker-friendly terrain due to its many plateaus and beaches on practically each side, long-distance walkers will especially have fun exploring the region. Be sure to bring a good pair of shoes to make short walks easy, also bringing binoculars for bird-watching and goggles for viewing aquatic wildlife along clear white coves.

Start the day’s journey at either the far north or south side of the island. Along the north side is Bold Point, a brilliant lookout home to windy vistas of the smaller North Island, while Sabina Point is a challenging peninsula trek home to incredible inlet viewpoints. Three main beaches are located between Bold Point and Sabina Point; two are located along the northeast shore, while a smaller isolated beach rests along the inner cove of Sabina Point’s peninsula. On the south side of the island are two more neighboring vistas named Eddy Point and South Tide Point; South Tide Point is the southernmost point of the island, difficult to reach and rocky, while the easier-to-access Eddy Point offers cool views of Coffin Island as well as a secluded beach worthy of soaking up the sun.
