One of many often overlooked isles connected to South America’s off-shore English properties of Falkland Island, Carcass Island is a small oasis filled with scenic lookouts and beaches isolated from the world but not too far from civilization of The Falkland Islands. Watch albatross soar as a smaller boat greets the shore with scenic views, larger cruise ships likely to dock either along the waters of the nearby Byron Sound, or the ferry terminal along the shore of the sheep-herding community of Port Howard. A single dirt road connects the few landmarks throughout the island, either accessible through semi-rigorous hiking or tranquil transfers booked ahead of time, whether it be a helpful local personal driver who can take the slow and informative route, or a private sedan perfect for taking a self-guided tours through the island’s easy-to-navigate tropics.

An easy way to start one’s journey across the island is by starting on the south end, and slowly moving north along the coastline. Discover the beauty of not one but two beaches along both the western and eastern shores of Carcass Island. These include Ballast Beach along the west end of the island, as well as the much smaller Leopard Beach along the southeast end. If visitors plan to walk across the ethereal white-sand coves of Leopard Beach, consider trekking to both Needles Point and Gothic Point, each located on either side of the shoreline and offering vivid vistas of the off-shore Low Island. Travel to the much further North West Point for intimate perspectives of the Jason Islands afterward, finally retiring to the mainland’s Port Howard for a bite to eat at the Port Howard Shop, even considering a day-trip by ferry to East Falkland for a wider variety of charming English-colonial sea fare in Stanley.
