A town devastated by fire the year before Norway declared its independence, the western and eastern islands of Ålesund were mostly destroyed in 1904 - upon its rebuilding, architects at once re-created the town in the style of both Nordic and Art Nouveau architecture, giving the small space an especially universal feel.
