Things to do in Hampton
Hampton is a lovely city to visit. The history of Hampton is extensive and begins in the early 17th century. As one of the first settlements in this country, Hampton played a role in the Revolutionary War and was the hometown of the country’s first African American spy who provided vital information to the continental army that ended up forcing the surrender of Cornwallis, a decisive victory in the war.

Hampton also played a role in the Civil War. Fort Monroe, located near Hampton, remained a Union holding despite the widespread adoption of Virginia as a Confederate state. As such, Hampton and Fort Monroe were major centers of escaped slaves and became a symbol of freedom for many during the Civil War. Hampton today has beach access and historical monuments and museums that convey the history of the town and allow visitors to enjoy both the modern comforts of coastal Virginia and the historical past of the area.
