General Francisco Javier Mina International Airport commonly known as Tampico International Airport abbreviated TAM is located in Tampico, Tamaulipas, Mexico. It’s named after the leader of Mexico’s War of Independence General Francisco Javier Mina.

Where to eat and sleep in Tampico
On Highway 80 there is an IHOP and a 360 Grills and Bar near the Hampton Inn. IHOP serves breakfast and diner food 24 hours per day. Further down 80 is the Comfort Inn and across the street is the Café Inn. There is also a Burger King on Av Universidad, just like its American counterparts there is a playground there for the kids. Near the square is Restaurant La Troya it’s a little pricey than some of the other options but has great food. Hotel Regis is a great option if you are on a budget.

About Tampico Airport
It handles approximately 600 thousand passengers each year. There is one flight every day from Houston, Texas in the USA via united Airlines. Tampico itself is the fifth largest city in Tamaulipas and is directly north of Veracruz. It has more than 800 thousand inhabitants. Tampico was a pioneer of economic development in the soda and aviation industries. Seafood is very important to the city especially the crab or Jaibas. The locals affectionately call themselves jaibas and you can see the crab on the side of buses and other places as an emblem. Their chief export is oil but they also export lumber, silver, copper, wool, hemp, and other agricultural products.

How to get around in Tampico
Driving is the best way to get around Tampico. Watch the speed limits and red lights they are strictly enforces although many other laws are lax. Taxis are another way to get around Tampico. Use caution when traveling alone by taxi.

Things to do near TAM
Go to the bullfights that are held several time s a year. They last 3 or 4 days and are hosted by the cattle ranchers. There is very good shopping in Colonial square downtown. You can also visit the cathedral there.

See the ballet or the symphony at the Metropolitan Cultural Center. Take a guided tour of Huasteca Cultural Museum. Take a trip to Playa Miramar a popular beach. It’s safe and clean during the high season some extra care can be taken to keep the beach clean but it is for the most part. Tampico is very close to the border: Monterrey, Mexico; and Brownsville or McAllen, Texas are just minutes away. You will need the appropriate documentation if you plan to cross the border.
