About Edgewater
With a 2010 census population of eleven thousand five hundred people, Edgewater is a popular destination for those who want easy access to the big Metropolitan area, yet want to live in a smaller location. Edgewater has become a fast growing residential community in the last many years due to the ease of booking a shuttle from JFK International airport. The total land mass of Edgewater is approximately two and a half square miles.
 
Originally home to many Native Americans, the land was settled by colonists in the late 17th century. The Ferry service at Burdett’s Landing proved to be a huge valuable asset during the Revolutionary War. Etienne Burdette provided ferry service to Manhattan in 1758. During the Revolutionary War, the ferry was a link for information, supplies and transportation. Following this time, Edgewater became a resort town with many hotels and resorts.

During the 20th Century, Edgewater was filled with industrialization. Many of the facilities produced and provided products such as oils and sugars for confectionary purposes, chemicals and dye manufacturing occupied many of the other facilities. Some lasting notable landmarks that remain a part of Edgewater today are the Binghamton Ferry and the Edgewater Public Library, which are both listed on the Historical Registry. Veteran’s Field is located on River Road and is home to a playground and many sports teams for the area. The River Walk along the waterfront is a popular spot for many visitors. Newcomers and visitors alike also enjoy seeing the free flying colony of Quaker Parrots who have made Edgewater their home since 1980.

New Jersey Transit and the Port Authority Bus Terminal provide public transportation in the area. Travelers are also able to utilize taxicabs and rental car agencies located nearby. Enterprise, Avis and EZ rental all have agencies that rent personal vehicles. Homeward, Comfort Inn and Double Tree are hotels available for room rental. These offer many amenities to their registered guests.
