Chelsea used to be a booming industrial region. As warehouses shut down, it became a forgotten area of the city before experiencing a resurgence in the mid-1900’s. Much of the industrial section has been taken over by the arts.
About Chelsea and The Meatpacking District
The neighborhood features some of the city’s best shopping, most notably the Chelsea Market. Chelsea is one of the most visited places in NYC, you will see high tech companies and redevelopment of this area, where most people will book a shuttle service to New York airport and can be there in about 45 minutes.

In addition to the fine restaurants, Chelsea is full of wonderful bakeries. While midtown is largely a business district, Chelsea is primarily residential. You will see a fair number of tourists coming in to visit some of the neighborhood’s major sites, but there are plenty of small boutiques and unique bars known only to the locals. If you are planning dining out, it is wise to make a reservation in order to avoid being turned away.

The High Line Park is fairly new and has brought a surge of new life into the neighborhood. This elevated park is built on an old railroad and offers some of the best views in the city. The Hudson River Park is another huge attraction which is beautifully landscaped and full of grassy spots and well tended trails.

The Meatpacking District is directly south of Chelsea and one of the city’s smallest districts. It’s name reflects the area’s history as a center of beef production but you won’t find many cows there these days. It is now one of the city’s trendiest up-and-coming residential districts. If you ask natives of midtown where to go to find the fun at night, they will invariably point you towards the Meatpacking District.

As with most of midtown, the residents of Chelsea and the Meatpacking District are large college-educated singles in their mid- to upper 30’s. These are not necessarily popular neighborhoods for families. If you do have children, however, Chelsea has many private schools that are very popular.
